Hub placement

In-wheel — hub — motors embed the stator and rotor inside the wheel hub rather than driving the wheel via belt and external motor can. Mellow used two powered rear wheels for traction and balanced torque delivery. Eliminating belts removed a wear item and reduced roadside debris ingestion, a practical advantage for urban riders.

Hub motors of the era typically traded peak torque and thermal mass against belt systems. Mellow's mode system partially compensated by limiting acceleration in Eco and Rookie profiles while allowing fuller performance in Pro — subject to battery state and temperature.

Rider-facing effects

Hub boards feel different from belt drives: rolling resistance can be slightly higher when unpowered, regeneration feels more integrated with motor braking, and wheel swaps require hub-compatible assemblies rather than generic longboard wheels.
